Lower Rainham Road home in Gillingham taken over by enormous spider for Halloween

An enormous spider has taken a family home hostage this Halloween.

The spooky spectacle can be seen along Lower Rainham Road and Lower Featherby Road, Gillingham, and has been in the making since June.

Dad-of-five, Kieron King, has made the spectacular effort to raise funds for Demelza Hospice, a charity that provides specialist care and emotional support for babies, children and young people.

The house sized spider, and most of the other decorations, are all homemade.

Kieron, a 37-year-old escalator engineer and carpenter, even made his own costume from scratch and intends to wear it when greeting any trick or treaters this weekend.

He said: "It started when I lived in Bexley and my my eldest son, who was 12 back then, started doing it with me.

"But now he's all grown up and he's not interested in helping me anymore, so it's the youngest that are involved now."

Kieron, who is actually petrified of spiders, has tried and tested multiple ways to build the abnormally large creepy crawly.

"I make everything to save money, but I ended up making the spiders because the postage was just ridiculous when I was looking at ordering some from America.

"The first one started as expanding foam but that turned out to be so expensive.

"So then the giant one is now polystyrene which I recycled from work."

Kieron and his family began decorating for the spooky season six years ago.

He said: "It didn't start out as something to do for charity, it was something to do with the kids during the summer.

"But obviously during the week of Halloween we found people who wanted to get involved.

"Last year we had so many people come and visit and then they offered to donate.

"It seemed like such a waste not to do anything with donations so we decided to fundraise for Demelza."

Over the Christmas period Kieron does a bike ride for Demelza dressed as Santa Claus to deliver presents to the children.

Because of this, he decided that all the Halloween profits should also go to the charity.

He said: "Last year, in three days, we raised just shy of £2,700 and we'd love to beat that this year.

"Demelza are going to bring the children here to look at the Halloween display as well so that will be lovely."

Kieron, his partner Becky Cross, two of his children, Scarlett, 3, and Charlie, 4, helped create the display in just one day.

Their nephew, Bradley King, 14, also gave a helping hand.

Kieron finished: "If you come and visit please just be careful the road, it is just so busy.

"Other than that come and enjoy the display.

"I've got a limited number of rosettes for best dressed so please do come and dress up!"
