Prime Minister David Cameron has announced that the public will have their say on whether we should stay or leave the European Union in a vote on Thursday, June 23.
We asked shoppers in Chatham High Street what they thought.
William Morton, 39, from Chatham, said: “It’s impossible to know how to come to a decision. The government are asking for a black and white decision and it’s not like that.
“I don’t think it will affect me either way - I’m not planning on going travelling across Europe on my holidays.”
Emma Nelson, 19, from Walderslade, said: “100% yes we should stay! There are no countries that have gone out it’s uncertain what will happen if we left.
“If people want to move here it just makes it harder for them to do that and the economy will be affected by it.”
Jack O’Meara, 23, from Luton Road, Chatham, said: “I’ve got the gist of what’s going on, but I don’t see how either coming out of Europe, or staying in, will affect me.
“If it doesn’t affect me day to day it’s not that much of a concern to me what happens.”
Jamie-Lee Walker, 19, from Walderslade, said: “We should stay in the European Union for a lot of reasons, for example, I want to go into nursing and I know the NHS is not great at the moment, so I want to go abroad and it’s a lot harder if we’re not part of the EU - especially if I change my mind and want to come back.
“We have to think about trade and what would happen if we left.”
