Experts called in to assess risk of ancient wall collapsing in Rochester

Building experts have been called in to assess the risk of an ancient wall collapsing in Rochester.

The stone wall, which lines The Cut between City Way and Delce Road, is bowing out above the road, and part of the wall was reported to have collapsed on Tuesday.

Teresa Brighouse posted pictures of the situation on Facebook, and warned people using the road to take care.

"Watch out if you drive up The Cut," she said. "The wall is bowing outwards and stones have already fallen down from the top. I will send an advice to the Council."

Teresa said engineers were quickly on site, 15 minutes after she had called reported the situation.

Medway Council says the wall has now been cordoned off and building experts are assessing the structure.

"We visited the site this morning and have cordoned off one lane to make the area safe," said a council statement. "We will work with the building inspector to assess the repairs needed and liaise with the landowner to ensure permanent repairs are carried out."

The situation sparked concern among Rochester residents, who thanked Teresa for highlighting the danger.

"Looks like I'm driving a different way to work tomorrow!" said one, while another said: "Thanks for letting everyone know - so dangerous."

Another added: "More people need to know about this - hope the wall doesn’t collapse and someone gets hurt."
