A parish council says it is “extremely disgusted” following costly damage caused to a “much loved” play park.
Schooner Walk Play Area in Lower Upnor is believed to have been set alight at around 7pm yesterday evening (June 12).
Part of the park, including a swing, has been taped off following the incident.
Frindsbury Extra Parish Council said it is “extremely disgusted” following the damage to the “much loved asset” for the children in the community.
A spokesperson said: “This is more money for repairs which may have to be used from the Precept, which comes from residents’ council tax instead of the parish council using the money for investing into the area.
“If anyone has any information or if their children have come home smelling of smoke last night please get in contact with the Parish Council or directly to the police.
“Could I kindly ask all neighbours who live near the park to check their CCTV between 6-9pm last night.”
A police spokesperson added: “At around 7.30pm [today] Kent Police was notified by Kent Fire and Rescue Service of a fire at a playpark in Galleon Way, Upnor.
“The cause of the fire is currently unknown and details of the incident have been recorded for further assessment.”
One fire engine attended and extinguished the fire using hose reel jets. The cause is believed to be deliberate.
