Two family cars went up in flames in a garage fire in Strood in the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters spent nearly two hours tackling the blaze behind a house in Hawthorn Road.

The vehicles, a Ford Focus and Vauxhall Corsa, along with tools and gardening equipment were destroyed.

The fire broke out at about 12.25am and may have been started by an electrical fault.

Crews from Strood, Medway and Hoo managed to contain the fire to the garage which was more than 20 metres away from the house.

A neighbour alerted the occupants, a middle-aged couple and their son, who were asleep at the time.
