A fire is now out and under investigation after flames earlier broke out in a building in Strood.
The fire was in an industrial building in Knight Road, near to the Morrison's supermarket.
People said police closed the road while firefighters dealt with the flames.
It is not known at this stage exactly what the building is which was on fire, but some people are suggesting it is a former dairy.
No one was injured and four fire engines were sent to the scene.
Crews used breathing apparatus to fight the flames in the derelict warehouse.
Fire crews have now put out the flames.
Natalie Hardy, spokesman for Kent Police, said: "Kent Police received a report of a fire at a derelict property in Strood at 4.12pm.
"Officers are at the scene in Knight Road assisting Kent Fire and Rescue Service.
"The road has been closed."
The fire was well alight when crews arrived and some of the roof collapsed as a result of the flames.
Mrs Hardy added: "There are no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is currently unknown."
Antony Masters, a spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service added: "People living within 100 metres of the site were advised to close their windows and doors due to the smoke."
Shortly before 6pm, Mr Masters confirmed the fire had been put out and the cause was now under investigation.
