Firefighters were called to the wrong side of the River Medway when a blaze broke out in a timber yard.

A member of the public phoned 999 from student accommodation in Rochester at 4am this morning and reported a building alight.

But when fire crews arrived at the scene, they realised the blaze was on the other side of the river on the Medway City Estate in Strood.

Around 50 tonnes of wood had caught alight in Scotline timber yard, in Sir Thomas Longley Road.

Crews from Strood, Medway, Hoo and Grain attended the scene, as well as a specialist water unit from Larkfield.

They spent almost four hours putting out the flames.

Watch manager Alan Brown said: "The initial call we got was from student accommodation on the Rochester side of the river. The person said they could see a building alight.

"When we arrived it was clear the fire was on the other side of the river, you could see it.

"Luckily the stacks of timber are spread out at the yard so if a fire starts, it won't spread. There was still a danger of the fire spreading, but fortunately the wind was going in the other direction across the river."

The fire crews left the scene just after 8am. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.
