Part of a roof of a house was damaged by fire after flames spread up ivy growing on the property.

Fire crews were called to Queens Road, in Chatham, shortly before 3pm yesterday after the ivy caught fire while boiler works were being carried out at the home.

The flames quickly spread up the foliage at the back of the property and set the roof alight as three fire engines were sent to the scene.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus while they tackled the flames and no one was injured during the incident.

Fire crews left the scene at about 4.10pm.

The fire has prompted fire crews to issues safety advice to homeowners.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: "Foliage can easily catch fire when exposed to radiated heat and crews are urging people to take care when having controlled bonfires or barbecues in the garden near to trees, bushes, fences and sheds.

"Never leave bonfires or barbecues unattended and an adult should supervise until it has burnt out.

"If it has to be left, damp it down with water."
