Officers cordoned off the area and closed nearby roads while they dealt with the incident.

It is understood the man later agreed to hand over the weapon to police, and no shots were fired.

A spokesman for Kent Police, said: “Firearms officers were required on scene and road closures were put in place at the junctions with Ellis Road and Ploughmans Way.

“A man was safely detained just before 6.30pm.”

The road closures and cordon was lifted a short time later. It is understood the man had a licence to own the gun.
