Those living in the surrounding area – including in Rochester and Gillingham – reported hearing a “loud explosion" in the area.

A KentOnline reporter at the scene watched crews enter a building as a cordon was established and spoke to a firefighter attending the call-out who told them they had not been able to find evidence of a fire.

A spokesman for the fire service later confirmed the cause of the explosion.

“The explosion, which was small and contained to the area, was caused due to an oxygen cylinder being pierced by one of the vehicles on site,” they said.

“Crews checked the area and made sure it was safe before leaving.”

There were no reported injuries.
