Firefighters were called put out two more fires which had been started by children in Strood on Sunday evening.

A crew from Strood was called out to Sycamore Road at about 6.30pm after trees and bushes had been set alight behind recycling containers.

The crew spent about half-an-hour fighting the flames.

Then about two hours later the same crew were called out to Broomhill Park, in Gorse Road, after youngsters set alight some undergrowth.

Watch manager Marc Rosier said: “We seem to be getting the run-around from some children in the area at the moment.

“We’ve been to Broomhill Park more than once over the past few days.

“The latest fire was in an area hard to get the hose reels to, in fact, we had to use water sacks which we put on our backs to fight the fire.

“What the youngsters fail to understand is at the moment the undergrowth is tinder dry and the fires spread really quickly.

“They also don’t realise that when we are putting out fires like this which take a lot of manpower and time, it is a drain on our resources.

“If there was a fire at their house at the same time a crew from further afield would be called out to deal with it.

“This would mean it would take firefighters longer to get to their house, which could lead to the fire being a lot worse.

“I’d just like to remind youngsters it’s not a very good idea to start fires and would ask them to think about what they are doing before they light one.”
