Firefighters spent hours putting out a rubbish fire on the beach in Cliffe on Friday morning

A crew from Strood fire station was called out to the shore area off Salt Lane at about 6.24am, after about 100 metres of rubbish caught alight.

A spokesman said: "It seems rubbish washed up from the sea was alight.

"It is not clear how the fire started but a crew was still on the scene at about 8.30am."
