Flats and a food shop could be built on a site which was once home to Medway fire station.

The council has been asked for permission to redevelop the land on the corner of Watling Street and Star Mill Lane in Gillingham.

The plans were submitted earlier this month and include the shop with four apartments, each with two bedrooms, above it.

There would be five three-bedroom apartments in a separate block behind it.

The homes would be next to the newer, recently-refurbished fire station and an ambulance station.

The £4.8 million fire station opened in 2017, while the ambulance station will eventually be replaced by a new facility in Gillingham Business Park, which is expected to become operational in the autumn.

The proposals being put forward by Hartley-based Kent Kraft Developments also include 15 parking spaces for shop customers and 18 for residents.

Comments on the council's planning portal raise concerns about how the development could impact parking, increased traffic and the risk of accidents on Watling Street.

Ward representative Cllr Wendy Purdy (Con) said while she believed the redevelopment of the site was inevitable, she was on the fence about the plans.

She added: "I have spoken to some people who have said the plans are brilliant and they are happy with it, but others are saying they don't want all the heavy traffic.

"I will listen to what residents say and move forward that way."

The council's planning department is due to make a decision on the plans by Wednesday, May 11.
