A fan has been arrested on suspicion of making homophobic comments at a football match.

A spectator is alleged to have made offensive remarks at a League Two game between Gillingham and Milton Keynes Dons earlier this month.

The comments were heard on Saturday, October 7, and a man was arrested at Priestfield Stadium on Saturday.

He was released on bail pending further enquiries, with conditions preventing him from attending any Gills fixtures while the investigation remains ongoing.

The comments were made within Block One of Priestfield's Rainham End while an MK Dons player was receiving treatment on the pitch.

Superintendent Rhiannan Pepper said: "Gillingham FC actively encourages its supporters to report hate-related abuse, and we worked closely with the club to identify and arrest the suspect in this case.

"There is no place in football or society in general for such offensive comments.

"Anyone proven to be responsible can expect to receive a criminal record and be banned from attending future matches.”

Speaking after the arrest, the club said: “We are aware of an arrest made by Kent Police on Saturday. The club reaffirms its position towards discrimination of any kind and will continue to work with the Police to eradicate it from Priestfield.”
