Foster carers are needed for stray dogs in Medway after a surge in the number being picked up by wardens.
The service was temporarily suspended last week because the kennels were full.
A total of 899 dogs were picked up between April 2014 and April 2015 and taken to Jasmil Kennels and Cattery in Breach Lane, Upchurch.
Kennel manager Corrina Shuttlewood said: “During the summer holidays we tend to have a lot of relatives looking after people’s animals. We have had one dog in three times, a brother looking after his sister’s dog.
“We have seen a big increase with the stray service, people not making proper arrangements for their pets. The people that are looking after it cannot keep it contained and secure.”
The council is looking for people to foster dogs whilst they are waiting for a permanent home.
A spokesman said: “We would like to remind people we are still looking for foster carers for dogs until a long-term home is found for them.”
Medway’s first dog park officially opened yesterday, Thursday, at Maidstone Road Sports Ground in Chatham.
The new secure dedicated doggy exercise area has seating for owners and plenty of dog waste bins.
Cllr Howard Doe, head of community services, welcomed the dogs into their new playground.
Around 300 dogs are reunited with their owners each year, as they are microchipped.
From April next year it will be compulsory to have your dog chipped, it will also be an offence if your contact details are not kept up to date. Thanks to the Dogs Trust, Medway Council is offering a free microchipping service in people’s homes. They also have a number of subsidised neutering vouchers.
If owners cannot be traced through the dog’s microchip the strays spend a week at Jasmil Kennels. If they are not claimed the kennel becomes responsible for them, and will try to find them a new home, but some may be put to sleep.
All the dogs are fully checked and monitored for suitability before they are placed in a home.
