Struggling for company or money this Christmas?
Grace Kelly is once more organising a day of festivities for those who are homeless, alone, or do not have enough money for a big family spread this year.
Everyone and anyone is welcome to enjoy turkey with all the trimmings followed by pudding and mince pies.
Expecting up to 120 people Ms Kelly, of Rochester High Street, has sourced a whopping 17 turkeys, and 15 large Christmas puddings - all donated by individuals and businesses.
Thirty people have volunteered to help out on the day, some in the morning to help prepare, others while food is being served, and some in the evening to clear everything up.
Last year at The Vines church, about 40 people came but with the much larger space this year, courtesy of the Salvation Army citadel in Church Street, Chatham, Ms Kelly is expecting at least twice as many people.
"It’s not just about food, it’s about companionship, making people feel at ease and feeding their souls as well as their bellies." - Grace Kelly
The 53-year-old said: “The volunteers have been amazing. We’re not turning anyone away, whether it’s someone on their own, with a friend, or an entire family that are worried about having enough food this Christmas.
“It’s not just about food, it’s about companionship, making people feel at ease and feeding their souls as well as their bellies.
“We’ve contacted the universities as well, because there are a lot of international students here, away from their families as well.
“It’s fantastic. We’ve had a lot of people already confirm they’re coming and ask for transport but I wouldn’t care if only one person walked through that door, if we’ve helped somone and put a smile of their face I’m happy.
“I don’t have a lot myself, but I feel thankful for what I do have and I’m happy to be able to spend my Christmas with all these people.”
With her 28-year-old son in Singapore this year with friends, the owner of 21st Century Carpets is looking forward to a busy and people-filled Christmas herself.
Lunch is being served on Christmas Day at 12.30pm and 2pm.
No booking required, simply turn up.
