Family, friends and rugby team mates will today attend the funeral of dad Shaun Tandy.
Mr Tandy, a 35-year-old scaffolder from Princes Park, died after falling off a roof.
He had a cardiac arrest while working on a business park in the West Midlands and despite attempts to resuscitate him, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Tributes have poured in for Medway-born-and-bred Mr Tandy, described as a “legend” by his many friends.
He was a hugely respected player and former captain of the first team at Lordswood Rugby Club.
A keen sportsman, he first got into rugby as a teenager. By the time he was 15, he had joined a side at the sports club in North Dane Way.
His funeral will be at Medway Crematorium, Blue Bell Hill, at 2pm followed by a wake at Lordswood Sports and Social Club.
A match in Mr Tandy’s memory will be held at the club’s home ground in North Dane Way on Sunday and there will be a minute of silence before kick-off at noon.
Former rugby club chairman Tony Gue said: “Everyone who knew Shaun is more than welcome and we will try to make sure everyone who wants to has a run around the pitch.”
Mr Tandy’s mum, Cindy Tandy, 60, said he was “her Peter Pan, a big kid who never grew up”.
Mrs Tandy, of Berkshire Close, said: “He could turn his hand to any sport. He liked playing football and had a spell of playing golf. But rugby was his first love.”
Although his job took him all over the country, he kept in regular touch with his mother.
He had split from Laura Hyland, mother of his son, Jack, but they kept in touch and he took his four-year-old out at weekends.
Mrs Tandy, who brought up Shaun and his brother, Chris, 37, single-handedly, said: “He might have been a big kid, but when he had a child of his own, he took on the role straight away. He was a very good dad.”
A joint investigation between West Mercia Police and the Health and Safety Executive is ongoing over Mr Tandy’s fall.
