Two Medway councillors say they are “horrified” that an area set for development by Medway’s largest landlord has become a dumping ground.
Rochester East Ward Labour Cllrs Teresa Murray and Nick Bowler carry out regular walks on their patch to talk to residents and look at any issues they have raised with them.
The pair had received complaints from people living in the Fleet Road area of town about the amount of fly-tipping at a disused set of garages owned by housing provider, mhs homes .
The councillors saw the mess for themselves when they visited it on Thursday , and they describe it as some of the the worst fly-tipping they have seen in their 15 years on Medway Council.
The site is set to be redeveloped later this year when mhs homes start building 11 homes on the site.
The two say the state of the site is completely unacceptable and want the mess dealt with as soon as possible.
Cllr Bowler said:”Our residents deserve better and fly-tipping such as this is illegal and should be dealt with and the culprits prosecuted.
Cllr Murray, who is also deputy leader of the Medway Labour Group, said: “We are particularly worried as this is the school holiday period with many children living in the surrounding area and part of the site giving access to properties and alleyways.
“There is an urgent need to take action.”
Bosses at mhs homes have thanked the pair for bringing the matter to their attention and promise to clean up the site as soon as possible.
Bruce Shelmerdine, finance director at mhs homes, added: “We are grateful to Cllrs Bowler and Murray for reporting the fly tipping to us.
“We will clear the waste as soon as possible and continue to monitor the site.
“Once all of the garages are vacant, we will install hoarding around the site to prevent further fly-tipping and allow building work to commence.
“We are planning to build 11 new homes on the garage site, including five two-bedroom houses and six one-bedroom apartments.”
