Food shopping delivery service in Rochester is booming

When shopkeeper Bob Lehal launched an express home delivery service in January, little did he know that lockdown was around the corner.

So when restrictions prevented many getting to supermarkets, his Rochester business – which guarantees getting goods to the doorstep within an hour of placing an order – rocketed.

Bob, who runs the Spar, in Maidstone, Rochester, with wife Sue, said: "It just went mad. At the peak I was doing a hundred deliveries a day."

His drivers cover all over Medway, from the Hoo Peninsula to Walderslade, and work flat out from 10am to 5pm.

Bob, 60, who has been at the convenience store for 35 years, said: "It started off as another platform for my business and we had about four or five orders. Word got around and we suddenly got new customers and repeat orders."

His customers include young mums and people isolating who have difficulty getting to the shops.

He said: "We sell fresh fruit and veg, chilled food and a lot of beer and wine."

Sue, 60, who runs the in-store post office, helps with the picking and packing once her counter duties are finished.

She said: "I can see this going on long after lockdown. A lot of people are saying 'if I can get my shopping delivered, then why not?'"

The couple, who live in Priestfields, Rochester, have a son Robert, 35, and daughter Emma, 29.

Bob said: "For us, lockdown has been a good thing."
