Members of a much-loved Royal British Legion Club will meet tomorrow in a bid to save the debt-ridden club.

The 74-year-old club, in Livingstone Road, Gillingham, was due to close on Sunday after struggling to cope with £40,000 debt.

But it has been given a temporary reprieve after members were told they now have until Friday, July 19, to find a new owner or see the club shut.

Last week a mystery donor pledged £5,000. Now campaigners are hopeful the remaining £35,000 can be found.

Jayne Mellor-Mackay, who is campaigning to save the club, said: “We are now hopeful it can be saved and we are going to continue with our campaign.”

Tomorrow members are due to meet with Paul Clark, Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Gillingham and Rainham.

Ms Mellor-Mackay added: ““We are meeting with Paul Clark on Wednesday and he hopes to help us find some more funding.

“We are still sad that there is a possibility it could close, but we are hopeful we can save it.”

If the club closes, it will no longer be able to run its annual Poppy Appeal in Medway, which last year raised £50,000.
