An arsonist is thought to be responsible for setting bins alight behind a post office in Gillingham in the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters from Medway fire station were called out to the corner of Sturdee Avenue and fourth Avenue at about 3.40am to find the plastic bins well alight.

The fire, which destroyed the bins, also caused some damage to the back of the building and the crew spent about 45 minutes at the scene putting out the flames.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "The police are investigating the matter."
