A former Gillingham player could play in the biggest game in European club football.
Chelsea left-back Ryan Bertrand, who went to The Robert Napier School in Third Avenue, Gillingham, is in line to be on the bench for the Champions League Final against German side Bayern Munich on Saturday (May 19).
Injuries and suspensions have ravaged the Blues’ squad, with a number of first choice defenders set to miss the game in Munich.
John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic are suspended, while Gary Cahill and David Luiz are not certain to be fit in time.
One of Bertrand’s former teachers told the Medway Messenger he always knew the 22-year-old was destined for success.
Mohamed Dada, who taught him Geography and took him for Games lessons at Key Stage Three, said: "He was miles away from everyone else, you could just see it.
"He was a 12-year-old who could make 60-yard cross-field passes. He was so comfortable on the ball.
"He deserves it, he’s such a nice down to earth kid."
Bertrand left Priestfield for Chelsea aged 16 in 2005 and the West London side were forced to pay an initial fee of £125,000.
Since then he has been out on loan to a number of other clubs, racking up more than 100 appearances in the lower leagues.
Gillingham have received £50,000 for his first-team debut and a further £100,000 this season following his 10 appearance.
This season has seen Bertrand break into Chelsea’s first team, starting league matches against the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool.
He has impressed many with his assured performances and has been mentioned as a possible long-term replacement for current left-back Ashley Cole.
As for how far he can rise – Mr Dada, who is now the Head of Geography at Chatham Grammar School for Boys, said: "If he remains focused he is going to go far, he’ll be a good player for England."
