GILLINGHAM have been holding talks with experienced Bolton strikers Rod Wallace and Dean Holdsworth over possible moves to Priestfield.

Gills are looking to strengthen their attacking options after losing the services of jailed star striker Marlon King and uncertainty still surrounding the future of Iffy Onuora.

Manager Andy Hessenthaler is away on holiday in Florida but, before leaving, gave chairman Paul Scally a list of 20 players who he was interested in bringing to the club. The Bolton pair are thought to be two of the names and discussions took place with them at Priestfield last week.

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce has a number of established players out of contract and is likely to be willing to let some go to make way for new faces.

Former Leeds hitman Wallace has come to the end of a one-year contract with the Trotters, having joined them last summer from Rangers. Holdsworth signed for Bolton for £3.5m from Wimbledon five years ago.

He has been linked with a move to Gillingham in the past but his wage demands scuppered any move.

Gills coach Wayne Jones said: “Dean has played at the very top. He is a good target man and scores his fair ratio of goals and, of course, you are interested in players like that. But Premier players have nowadays got to rethink their wage structure and know that clubs are up against it a little bit and that they have got to cut their cloth accordingly.”

Meanwhile, Onuora, who has only been verbally offered a new deal, is being linked with a move back to his club Mansfield.

It looks like the Stags’ leading goalscorer Chris Greenacre could soon be moving on and Onuora is among those being touted as a replacement.
