Pupils in Rochester took part in the filming for fashion guru Gok Wan’s new television show today (Thursday).
Maverick Television was at Rochester Independent College, which has a non-uniform policy.
The company was filming footage for a new four-part Channel 4 series to be aired this summer, with the working title Gok’s Teens: The Naked Truth.
Students, staff, parents and even dinner ladies were on stand-by to take part although Gok Wan, right, was not expected at the school.
His new show will focus on teenagers and their issues and anxieties while growing up. Elements of the show will touch on school uniform and how it affects pupils’ behaviour, confidence and morale. Programme makers intend to look at reasons for and against school uniform, the history of uniform and individual stories from schools and pupils.
School principal Alistair Brownlow said: "Our students are free to wear whatever they like to school as long as it does not present a health and safety hazard or is offensive.
"Our teachers don’t have to waste time enforcing petty uniform rules, there’s nothing to rebel against, confrontation is avoided and teachers enjoy positive and mutually respectful relationships with students as a result."
Maverick Television is also planning to visit a school which has a Tudor-style uniform and a school in Norwich which has had a uniform designed by Saville Row tailors.
