Hoofing a football around a golf course in Marrakesh with your mates doesn't sound like the worst way to spend a week in December, but this is no jolly-boys' outing.
The UK footgolf squad will head out to Morocco to compete in the third Footgolf World Cup, and among them will be 22-year-old Blake Cavender, of Lordswood.
If you haven’t heard of footgolf already, it’s golf but using your feet instead of a club and a football instead of a golf ball - and it’s become so popular Blake thinks it’s not long before top competitions will be on TV.
“I was playing football at a decent level and then I got injured,” recalled Blake, who works as a supervisor at the BP petrol station in Maidstone Road, Chatham.
“I broke my leg when I was 17, so I had a year out and then saw footgolf was advertised at college.
“I went down to play at The Strand, then met a few of the guys that play on the tour and got into it.
“I carried on playing for a few months.
"I knew I was fairly decent at kicking a ball, and the guys on the tour said I was decent and said why don’t you give it a go on the tour.”
It was a wise suggestion. After playing for two years at Princes Park in Dartford, Blake has become UK amateur champion, signed to Gatwick Footgolf Club and been selected to play for his country.
“The heat out there is going to be tough to deal with,” he added.
“The courses are going to be very difficult, but I would say that suits us because we’re used to playing technical courses.
“I’m buzzing for it. I can’t wait to get out there.”
The World Cup will take place from Sunday, December 9 to Sunday December, 16.
