A junior golf day was held in memory of a young boy who died on a school trip last year.
Hayden Waller was killed while trying to save a friend who had fallen while on a school skiing trip in Austria in February 2008.
The 12-year-old Howard School pupil was a keen golfer and used to have lessons with gold pro Andrew Brooks at Gillingham Golf Club.
The club in Woodlands Road held a memorial golf day for Hayden on Saturday. A total of 22 juniors, aged 10 to 17, took part.
The winner was Marcus Partou, who was presented with the Hayden Waller memorial trophy, which will be displayed at the club. Second place went to Paddy Nicholls and third was awarded to Sean Calloway. All three boys were given a silver cup to take home.
Hayden’s grandfather, John Kerwood , from Rainham, organised the event. Mr Kerwood has been a member of the golf club for more than 30 years and had passed his passion for the sport onto his young grandson.
He said: “Hayden was a keen golfer. He had lots of lessons and would have become a member of the club.
“The memorial day was superb. All the boys really enjoyed it and we’re hoping it will become an annual event.”
