Guest thought to have started fire at Cuxton hotel by smoking

Hotel guests had to stand outside in sub zero temperatures after a fire started in one of the bedrooms.

Firefighters believe the blaze was sparked at the recently-opened Premier Inn, in Cuxton, by an occupant of one of the rooms smoking.

Guests had to wait outside wrapped in their duvets while crews from Medway and Strood fire stations dealt with the flames at about midnight on Monday.

Strood firefighter Martin Simmons said: "About 30 people had to be evacuated. The hotel staff did very well in getting everybody out.

"People had to wait outside for about 20 minutes and it was obviously very cold. The occupant of the room where the fire started didn't stick around though."
