Bid for bingo premises licence for former Gadcet computer shop in Chatham High Street

A half-mile stretch of high street could be set to welcome its sixth gambling venue.

Plans have been submitted for a “state of the art adult gaming and bingo venue” in Chatham High Street to take the place of a former Gadcet computer shop - which was recently closed over its alleged links to an illegal cryptocurrency ATM business.

Wilson’s Casino, the parent company of Slots Trading Ltd, have applied to Medway Council’s licensing department for a bingo premises licence for the store.

The new shop will feature electronic bingo tablets for national games, as well as a selection of gaming machines.

If approved, Wilson’s Casino hope to have the new location opened in Spring 2025 and say they will employ seven full-time staff members.

A spokesperson for Wilson’s Casino said: “The Wilson family have successfully operated multiple venues across the country since 1963 and are now looking forward to opening a state-of-the-art adult gaming and bingo venue on the high street.

“We will be contributing to both the daytime and night-time economies of Chatham while also adding to the vitality of the high street by rejuvenating a shop front that has been vacant for 18 months.”

Slots Trading Ltd also runs another branch of Wilson’s Casino in Maidstone.

If approved, it would be the sixth gambling and gaming venue within a mile of each other.

On the High Street already are Mr P’s Classic Amusements, Betfred, Coral, and William Hill stores.

And the new shop is just across the street from Admiral Casino, which has held an adult gaming licence since 2018.

Gadcet, which Wilson’s Casino has applied for a licence for, was the site of a raid by police in April 2023 where officers say a number of cryptocurrency ATMs were seized.

In August, the shop’s owner Habibur Rahman, 37, of Langdon Crescent in East Ham, London, was the first person in the UK to be charged on suspicion of operating an illegal cryptocurrency ATM.

Mr Rahman pleaded not guilty and a warned list date of September 7, 2026, has been given for the trial.

Before it was Gadcet the store was J.C Rook & Sons butchers.

Elsewhere in Chatham, the former Buzz Bingo bingo hall closed in 2020 during the pandemic.

In December 2022 Donard Homes applied to Medway Council to build 231 flats on the site, along with commercial or community spaces.

The outline application is still being considered by planning officers, with no date set for when they will make a determination.

The proposals have received 25 letters of objection, and Arches Chatham Neighbourhood Forum (ACNF) wrote to raise concerns over the heights of the proposed buildings and the density of the flats within the 0.57 hectare site.

The designs would split the flats into 112 one-bed properties, 110 two-bed properties and nine three-bed properties across 11 floors.

The bingo licence application for Wilson’s Casino on Chatham High Street will be considered in the New Year.
