A big-hearted teenager will be feeling the cold after having his head shaved to raise money for a young mum with cancer.
Nathan Thompson was so touched by the Medway Messenger’s story about Laura Hymas, he wanted to do something to help.
Laura, 25, of High Street, Rochester, needs £90,000 to continue pioneering treatment for a brain tumour, which has already proved a success.
Nathan, 15, read the moving plea from Laura’s fiance Ben and asked his mum Sandra if he could help.
Sandra, of Holly Road, Strood, said: “He came to me andsaid 'Mum this story is really sad’ and that he would like to do something.
“I suggested he have his legs waxed, but then he came up with the idea of having his head shaved.”
In just a few days Nathan had collected £180 in sponsorship from family and friends, as well as pupils and staff at Strood Academy, where he goes to school.
Nathan had the drastic hair cut at Ace Hair Care and Design in Strood.
Sandra (pictured above with Nathan) added: “We are so proud of him. He has done really well and he is really pleased with how much he has raised.”
Laura, who is mother to two-year-old Jacob, was diagnosed with cancer on Christmas Eve last year. She has been receiving pioneering treatment not available on the NHS after friends, family, and complete strangers rallied around to raise £75,000 to send her to America.
Laura’s latest scan results reveal the drugs are working – her tumour has shrunk by 36% in the last six weeks. But now she needs a further £90,000 to continue treatment, which involves having daily doses of drugs and scans every six weeks.
