Police flyers have been put up in the streets surrounding Priestfield telling people to expect to see more fans and officers in the area due to the significance of the match.

Speaking earlier Ch Supt Adrian Futers said: “We will have additional officers on duty to facilitate all parties enjoying the game and to minimise any disruption to the community that a large event can cause.”

The Gills, currently in eighth place, needed to take all three points from the game to have any chance of getting through to the play-offs.

On Saturday afternoon it looked as though their hopes were over with Barnsley leading but, in an amazing twist, already relegated Colchester United scored a 98th-minute equaliser to throw Gillingham an unexpected lifeline.

Chairman Paul Scally told fans on Sunday, during the club’s end-of-season awards, there was still “everything to play for” and went on to give his prediction of the how the season will end with the Gills gaining promotion to the Championship.

He said: “The door is not closed. We still have a bit of a chance.

“My prediction is Burton will lose their last game of the season, Walsall will beat Fleetwood on Monday [which did happen], Walsall will win their last game, Burton will drop to third place, Barnsley will go to Wigan and lose, Scunthorpe will draw to Sheffield United and we will beat Millwall.

"We will meet Burton home and away in the play-offs, beat them home and away, Millwall will beat Bradford and we will play Millwall at Wembley, we will beat them and we will get promoted.”
