A grandfather who ended up in A&E after tackling an armed raider found he had been slapped with a parking ticket after being discharged from hospital.
Kevin Delahay was in the Co-op in Gillingham when a masked man walked in and pointed what looked like a gun at the shop assistant.
The 63-year-old was waiting to pay for his lunch at the till and when he realised what was happening, he lunged at the man and managed to get the weapon out of his hands.
Another robbery had taken place at the same store just two days before.
He said: “I was standing at the counter when a man walked in, he had his face covered with a black cloth.
“He walked around the back of me, he didn’t say anything, then he just pulled the gun out.
“I thought ‘I’m not going to end up wearing that gun’ so I just lunged at him.
“I’ve not had any training in anything like that. It was just instinct.”
The Twydall resident spent more than seven hours at Medway hospital to treat a cut to his hand.
But when he returned to his car parked opposite the shop in Gillingham Road, he found he had been give a £60 fine.
The grandfather-of-five said: “I couldn’t believe it when I found out I had a parking ticket.
“I’ve called the council but been told I’ve got to appeal in the usual way.
“I’ve done my bit, by stopping this person, but all I’ve had is hassle ever since.”
He added: “The following morning it sunk in, I was shaking as I sat there eating my breakfast.”
Medway Council spokesman Carly Wymark said: “Due to the circumstances we would advise this gentleman to contact us and we will assess his appeal.”
The drama unfolded at 11.45am on Monday.
Matthew Waddington, 38, of Gillingham Road, Gillingham, has been charged with robbery, attempted robbery, and two counts of possessing an imitation firearm. He appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday and was committed to crown court to appear on November 14.
