Hospital assaults scandal revealed

EXCLUSIVE

Medical staff are being assaulted more than once a week at Medway Maritime Hospital - but hardly any are getting justice.

Figures obtained by the Messenger show there have been almost 160 attacks at the Gillingham hospital in the last two years.

But only one attacker has been prosecuted as bosses reveal they do not automatically report cases to police.

Councillors have expressed shock at the low level of prosecutions and called for more to be done to deter attackers.

A hospital spokesman said attacks on staff were "relatively rare" and taken very seriously.
