From tomorrow, Medway Maritime Hospital will be governed by a Foundation Trust.
It means plans to develop and modernise the Gillingham hospital can soon go ahead, including knocking down 100-year-old ward blocks and replacing them with new facilities.
Foundation status was achieved after a process lasting 18 months involving detailed assessments by the Department of Health and the independent regulator, Monitor.
Chief executive Andy Horne said work undertaken to achieve foundation status had improved standards of care at the hospital.
"We believe that becoming a foundation trust will help the hospital thrive and become a stronger part of the community," he said. "It will be accountable to local people.
"We hope they will support the trust by becoming members and taking part in our exciting new future."
Foundation trusts have more independence from the Department of Health and can make more decisions. They are able to raise finance independently of the DoH to improve buildings and services.
Anyone can apply to become a member of a Foundation Trust. Members can also become elected as directors.
