Kent Police today welcomed a new crime mapping website which lets people see what's going on in their neighbourhood.
Residents can now go online to find out how many burglaries, robberies and violent crimes have happened on their doorstep.
The information is published on www.police.uk. By typing in a postcode, people can see what crime and anti social behaviour has happened and are given local police contacts.
By viewing www.kent.police.uk, they can also see what their team is doing to make their area safer. Kent Police's Deputy Chief Constable Alan Pughsley said: "Kent Police has joined up with all other police forces in England and Wales to launch a new tool that will help communities to better understand what's happening in their community. "By making this information available, we aim to raise awareness of what we're doing to tackle crime and disorder and how local people can support their local police." The interactive national map also gives the public access to details about their neighbourhood policing team and beat meetings. Residents can view figures for all crime as well as burglary,
robbery, violence, vehicle crime, other crime and anti-social behaviour in their area at the touch of a button. Contact details and feedback channels for local policing teams, local policing priorities, crime prevention advice and information about forthcoming local events such as beat meetings will also be published to the site. Ann Barnes, Chair of Kent Police Authority said: "I'm delighted that street level crime mapping has been launched.
"Transparency and openness should be at the heart of every public service.
"Now for the first time the public will be able to see where crime is taking place, as well as information on how to contact their local neighbourhood officer.
"I'm confident this data will help to enhance the policing service the public of Kent and Medway receive, and can assure everyone in our communities that members of the Police Authority will, on their behalf, have a very clear watching brief."
Crimes are broken into six categories - violent crime; burglary; robbery; vehicle crime; anti-social behaviour; and "other".
Sex offences have been included under "other crime" to avoid victims being identified from the figures.
