A major crash has caused huge delays on the M2 at rush hour.
The M2 coastbound between Junction 3 for Chatham and Junction 5 for Sittingbourne has been partially blocked since 1.35pm.
A second collision has led to further issues.
Police, paramedics, fire crews and the air ambulance were called to a crash involving a BMW four by four and a truck, which happened near the Medway Services on the coastbound carriageway.
Police spokesman Sally Smith said: "The London-bound carriageway was closed temporarily to allow emergency services to work at the scene.
"Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are conducting inquiries."
Police confirmed just after 8pm that a man in his 20s had died in the collision and another, aged 22, has been arrested.
A second crash has also closed two lanes of M2 between Junction 2 for Rochester and Junction 3 for Blue Bell Hill.
That crash happened at around 3.30pm between a car and a van on the coastbound carriageway.
According to a tweet from Highways England South East, traffic officers are on their way to the scene.
Traffic is already building on surrounding routes through Chatham, Rainham, Newington, and Gillingham, including on Hoath Way.
The collisions caused traffic misery throughout Medway, motorists reported gridlock in Chatham, Gillingham and Strood.
It took one driver an hour to travel a mile to the entrance to Medway City Estate.
While a lorry managed to get stuck in a lane near the scene of the four by four crash adding to lengthy tailbacks.
