Police are investigating after small, human bone fragments were found at a home in Twydall - but the scene has been stood down.
The discovery was made on Friday and officers were at the property in Kingsnorth Road until late on Saturday evening.
Police were also seen digging in the next door neighbour's front garden.
So far the age of the bones is unknown.
A passerby said there had been a police car on the drive since 6.30am on Saturday as well as a forensic van, with a community officer on patrol outside.
At 5.30pm the same witness saw more police arrive.
Today, a police spokesman said: "The scene in Kingsnorth Road, Gillingham, where small, human bone fragments were found has now been stood down.
"Officers are conducting ongoing enquiries to establish the full circumstances and are continuing to treat the matter as unexplained."
