Deangate turns Meangate obstacle course at Deangate Ridge Golf Course, Hoo, tested by reporter Clare Freeman

With views over the river and towns of Medway, Deangate Ridge Golf Course is usually a tranquil space - but not this weekend.

Hundreds of runners and bikers are set to descend on the site for Deangate turns Meangate. Reporter Clare Freeman tested out the course.

I was given one instruction on leaving the office – get ridiculously muddy.

After splashing through mud, crawling through mud, and wading – or swimming – through lakes, I wasn’t just muddy. I was also very wet and very cold.

The 8km obstacle course starts at the clubhouse and goes around the edge of the golf club in Dux Court Road, Hoo.

We started off with a nice jog but it didn’t last very long – first up, army-crawling under a net through the mud.

As well as making the most of the natural woodland and hills, the team have installed nets, tyres, wooden structures and crash mats to add to the challenge.

The course even goes through several ponds, and at one point I found myself having to swim – on the day there will be lifeguards on duty to make sure everyone stays safe and has fun.

The Medway Council event is open to anyone over the age of 16, and those over 11 when they run with an adult over 21.

Tackling the obstacle course Deangate Uncut costs £30 and there will be chip timing on the day to accurately record everyone’s time.

The weekend is the start of the council’s plans to make more use of the area with plans including cross country, orienteering, and more obstacle-style events.

Sunday includes a cyclocross and mountain bike competition as well as five-mile and 10-mile cross-country races.

All participants will receive a T-shirt and a medal, and supporters will be able to cheer their friends and family on from the warmth of the clubhouse.
