Planned four-month roadworks leading off a busy industrial estate have been postponed.
The extensive scheme was due to see Commissioners Road in Strood closed from today.
But the gas mains repairs have now been pencilled in to start on Monday, June 20.
It will mean motorists have only one route in and out of Medway City Estate where more than 6,000 people work.
A spokesman for gas utility company, SGN said: "Our essential network upgrades have been delayed following close consultation with Medway Council.
"To ensure everyone’s safety while we carry this work out, sections of Commissioners Road and Whitewall Road will be closed to motorists for approximately five weeks. A signed diversion route will be in place for affected motorists.
"Once our work is completed in July, UK Power Networks will begin working in Commissioners Road."
The council says the contract is due to last until mid-October with the closure enforced at all times during the works period.
It comes as a blow for those who have endured delays at peak times over the last 10 years.
A recently completed slip road on the Anthony's Way roundabout was designed to improve traffic flow leading onto Berwick Way – but has not totally eliminated congestion.
