Footballer George Howard was cheering from the side lines at a football fun day held in his honour.

The ex-Gills keeper was in a coma for 16 days after falling from the back of a truck on holiday in South Africa. George, 20, suffered life-threatening head injuries but just 21 days after coming off a ventilator, he was able to fly back to the UK. He has since been recovering at home in Rainham.

Since the accident his friends have raised thousands of pounds to help George during his recovery and support his family.

A charity day took place at the 44Two sports and special club in Gillingham, with football matches, a barbecue, bouncy castle and children’s characters. One of the teams was made up of family and friends and George was there to cheer them on.

Joining family and friends were Gills striker Danny Kedwell, former manager Andy Hessenthaler and ex-player Nicky Southall.
