A schoolgirl went back to class following half-term with a new look – after having her long locks cut short to help the homeless.
Isabel Christian, a Year 6 pupil at Fairview Community Primary School in Wigmore, has raised more than £1,000 to pay for food and supplies for people living on the streets in Medway.
The kind-hearted 10-year-old vowed to do something after seeing a homeless man sitting in a shop doorway with his dog.
She originally set herself a target of £500 but collected more than double the amount before her drastic hair cut on Saturday. She has now raised £1,230.
Her long hair was cut by Sarah Ayonmike at Code Red salon in Miliary Road, Chatham.
Mum Marie was there for support. She said: “I think I would have been more tearful if it had not been for Isabel getting the giggles.”
The money Isabel has raised will be donated to Medway Street Angels, which provides food, basic essentials and support for people sleeping rough across the Towns.
Sam Hewish, from the group, said: “We are so proud of Isabel and we are honoured that she chose to support us.
“We have had so much fun with the campaign and the donations are still coming in. Isabel has raised more than any of us imagined and the money is going to make such a difference for our friends on the streets.”
She said the group will use the cash to buy food, drinks, warm bedding and clothing.
Sam added: “We also support individuals with replacement IDs, rehabilitation costs and any other financial requirements they might need to help them get back on their feet.”
Isabel has donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust, a charity which provides real hair wigs to children suffering hair loss.
Mrs Christian added: “Isabel loves her new look. She went back to school on Tuesday and got some really positive comments.
“She is over the moon with how much she has raised and really proud of herself. I’m super proud.”
You can still donate online until Sunday.
