Firefighters had to rescue a four-day old kitten after he got stuck in a wall cavity at a home.

A woman who lives in Gillingham discovered the kitten has moved in somehow to her wall as she could hear it meowing when she returned from her holiday yesterday.

She quickly realised she could not get to the animal, so she called Kent Fire and Rescue Service to see if crews could help.

Firefighters from Medway and Maidstone used a specialist snake-eye camera – the type used to search collapsed buildings – to pinpoint the kitten’s exact location – and small hand tools to make a hole in the wall to free the trapped moggy.

Stuart Beadle, station manager at Medway said: “It appears the mother belonged to a neighbouring property but had found an opening in a flat roof and gone inside to have her kittens.

“Unfortunately one had found his feet and stumbled two metres down inside the cavity wall.

“Miraculously, despite being dusty and dirty, he was unharmed and reunited with his mother in less than an hour.

“His four brothers and sisters had escaped a similar plight as they had not yet taken their first steps.”

The litter were later handed over to the care of the RSPCA for precautionary checks.
