With more people than ever relying on food banks to get by, kmfm set out to collect as many tonnes of tins as possible.
Between July 3 and August 11, listeners and readers at home brought tins of beans, soup and other food to kmfm’s offices in Medway, and the final weigh-in for the Tonnes of Tins campaign took place today.
The team managed to secure 6.77 tonnes of groceries, which will now be delivered to UK Harvest, a charity which works across the south of England to rescue any surplus food and redistribute it to charities and community food hubs.
Listeners at kmfm were able to contribute by ordering tins from supermarkets to be delivered to the studio, buying and delivering tins themselves, or donating via a JustGiving page.
At the end of the six weeks, the fundraiser’s £5,018 raised was used to purchase as many tins as possible before having them delivered to UK Harvest, smashing the original £3,000 target.
Drivetime presenter Rob Wills said: “The whole point of Tonnes of Tins was simple, food poverty unfortunately is affecting so many families across the whole of the UK but unfortunately Kent has got some real problem areas and the food banks were running short.
“We need to say thank you to the team at Southern Water, the team at kmfm, KentOnline and our KM newspapers who have all dug deep today.
“Shoutout to Carpet Sales Centre and Fox Wardrobes, who literally in the last second donated vans and people to come and help us shift some of the food.
“Everyone that donated over £5,000 to our JustGiving page, and everybody who managed to come in, bring tins. It’s been an absolute awesome six weeks.”
The campaign took place in partnership with UK Harvest and Southern Water.
Southern Water community engagement officer Daniel Rodrigues said: “It’s a nice thing to be a part of.
“Southern Water has been doing Tonnes of Tins for a couple of years now, it started with V2 radio and carried on from there.
“It was made really to support local food banks during the summer when vulnerable people who need free school meals won’t necessarily have that and there’s a lot of pressure on food banks.”
This year the company has teamed up with V2 Radio in West Sussex, kmfm in Kent, and Fiesta 95 FM and Awaaz FM in Southampton to collect donations.
