A late night bus to ensure late-night revellers get home safely, has been given the go ahead in Medway.

The SOS bus which will hopefully will start running in the Towns in May, is being funded by the Medway Community Safety Partnership.

Kent Police, NHS Medway and Medway Council were all involved in getting the project off the ground, and have also committed funding to it.

When the bus is introduced it will have two purposes, the first will be to provide a facility to give first aid and advice to help people get home safely and the second as a mobile educational resource to be used during the day, particularly for health improvement initiatives.

The actual bus which will be used has now been purchased and work has already started to transform it.

Inspector Gary Woodward from Medway Police, said: “The bus will have some vital life saving equipment on board and will be split into three rooms.

“There is a medical room that will have oxygen and a defibrillator, an open area with seating and a private room.

“The bus will be a safe haven on Friday and Saturday nights around Medway dealing with people in a positive and non judgemental way who are in distress, under the influence, vulnerable, in difficulty or simply in need of advice or assistance."

Similar projects have already been launched and run successfully in other areas of UK, including, Norwich, Belfast and Colchester.
