Actor Michael Gambon, famous for his roles in Harry Potter and The Singing Detective, has died aged 82.
The Olivier award-winning actor, who had a home near Meopham, died peacefully in hospital following a bought of pneumonia, according to a statement from his family today.
Issued by publicist Clair Dobbs, on behalf of his wife Lady Gambon and son Fergus, the statement said: “We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon.
“Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82.
“We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love.”
Gambon first found success in the 1960s, treading the boards with Sir Laurence Olivier, and went on to enjoy a glittering career over six decades, starring in 80s drama The Singing Detective, and more latterly winning over a generation of new fans in his role as Dumbledore in Harry Potter.
A well-known figure in Kent, he was a regular visitor to the Fenn Bell Inn, in Hoo, and had previously been seen aboard a Kent & East Sussex Railway train at Tenterden station.
Other Kent appearances included a visit to Shears Green Junior School in Northfleet, for World Book Day in 2017.
