Firefighters were called to an address in Strood after a fire broke out in a doorway.

A crew were called out to a flat in Albatross Avenue, shortly after 10pm after the item, thought to be a bag which had been set alight, was found on the doormat.

The homeowner had managed to pick up the item and put it in the bath and pour water over it.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, (KFRS) said: "The person in the flat was awake when it happened and was able to deal with the fire himself.

"We were only on the scene for a short time."

A spokesman for Medway Police said: "A neighbour then called KFRS because they saw some smoke.

"The occupant did not want to report it as a crime so it is not being investigated."
