The M2 motorway was closed in both directions after a man was spotted on a bridge this evening.
The motorway was shut between junction 3 for Chatham and junction 4 for Gillingham, and has not reopened, contrary to earlier reports.
Eyewitnesses reported an ambulance and a police car at the scene.
The road was closed 6.50pm and caused long delays in the area with traffic queuing back into the Towns.
Many drivers stuck in the queues turned their engines off to wait.
A police spokesman said: "This closure follows a report of concern for the welfare of a man on a bridge. Officers are currently managing the incident."
The M2 was reopened just before 8pm.
