A Range Rover towing a caravan caught fire on the M2 London bound.
Firefighters were called to junction three at 2.56pm after the blaze started in the 4x4's engine compartment.
All four lanes were blocked, but the Range Rover - which used Liquid Petroleum Gas - and caravan were quickly moved to hard shoulder.
Firefighters managed to unhook the caravan and extinguish the fire using a hose reel.
They handed over to the Highways Agency and the road was reopened at 3.40pm.
Kent Highways reported the fire happening on the coastbound carriageway, whereas Kent Fire and Rescue later reported London bound.
