The M2 has reopened after an overturned lorry spilled fuel and debris were strewn across the road, but there is still gridlock in the towns.
All four lanes were closed near Rochester between junctions 3 (Chatham) and 2 (Strood) London-bound.

Work to remove plant machinery and debris strewn across the road started this afternoon.
The lorry has now been removed and the diesel has been cleared.
It is still causing heavy traffic across Medway, with tailbacks from the Rochester Bridge to Borstal and in and around the Medway City estate.
Some drivers have had more than two hours added to their journey times.
Traffic was backed up to the Gillingham turn-off and people were being advised to find alternative routes.
However, diverted traffic was hindered by a crash on Blue Bell Hill that closed a southbound lane on the A229 at 2.30pm.
No injuries have been reported from the M2 crash.
Meanwhile, Maidstone Road in Chatham, was also shut following a crash but reopened at around 12.30pm.
