Emma Dewhurst got a sneak preview of the new Maggie Thatcher film - because she's in it!
The Chatham-based actress plays the former Prime Minister’s mother in a 1940s flashback in the film which is released on Friday. Oscar-winner Meryl Streep, who bears a striking resemblance to Miss Dewhurst, plays Mrs Thatcher in the biopic spanning several decades.
Miss Dewhurst said of the movie: “I’m very pleased with how it turned out, even though I look much older than I am!
She's previously admitted she would never have voted for Mrs Thatcher and adds: “My personal opinion hasn’t changed, but the film’s definitely going to divide people. She was a very divisive person.
“Still, it’s much more a study of a person who has had power than a political film. Meryl Streep is astonishing.”
The film has opened to mixed reviews in Australia, where it took $2 million at the box office in just four days.
Miss Dewhurst, who will play a teacher in BBC drama Parade’s End later this year, added: “I’m going to take my seven-year-old daughter and I hope she’ll be able to sit through it. If not, at least my scene’s near the beginning!”
