A man has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after a crash on a main road into Chatham.

The 35-year-old from Chatham was arrested following a crash this morning in Maidstone Road, next to Chatham Cemetery.

It is understood he was first taken to Medway Maritime Hospital for treatment.

The road was closed for more than two hours while police investigated and the vehicles were recovered.

A woman in her late 60s was also taken to hospital with minor injuries after the smash at about 8.30am. Firefighters, paramedics and police were all called to the scene.

A Toyota, Renault and a Citroen van were involved in the smash at the junction with Wyles Road, next to Chatham Cemetery. It is thought one of the cars was parked.

A police spokesman said: "A 35 year old man from Chatham was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and bailed pending further enquiries until September 5."

The offence of driving under the influence of drugs was only introduced last year after a heavy campaign from road crash victims and their families.
